New Developments in Wire Technology

In recent years there has been quite a change in the wires that are available for orthodontic treatment.  We are constantly evaluating new wire technologies that will make your orthodontic treatment more comfortable and of shorter duration.

Nickel Titanium Wires
These wires have a large range of activation and deliver a light, even continuous force even when they are activated a great distance.  These properties are ideal for an orthodontic wire especially in the early (alignment) phase of treatment.
Thermally Activated Wires
The thermally activated wires are very similar to the Nickel Titanium wires with the added advantage of being responsive to temperature.  When cold is applied to the wire it makes it very soft and easy to manipulate.  Heat on the other hand will stiffen the wire.  We use these properties when we are placing your wires.  Cold will be applied to a section of the wire which needs to be significantly activated.  This will allow us to fully engage the wire into your braces with minimal force or discomfort.  As the wire gradually warms to body temperature it will achieve the appropriate level of force necessary to move the teeth.
Nickel Titanium Springs
Nickel Titanium can also be fashioned into coil springs which can be placed to open or close spaces between the teeth.
