Your first visit to our office involves a comprehensive clinical examination with Dr. Alba which helps us to determine the nature of your orthodontic problem. This will help us to determine your concerns and to allow us to get a preliminary idea of the type of orthodontic treatment that will be necessary as well as the ideal timing of treatment. In our office we like to take digital camera photos at the first visit. This allows us to show you precisely what is going on with your bite and the alignment of your teeth. In this case a picture is truly worth a thousand words. This also allows us to prepare a summary of our findings along with the photographs so that you can refer back to this form for clarification of the findings and recommendations from your visit. Other family members who were not able to attend the visit will find this to be quite helpful. Normally a screening x-ray is also taken if this has not been done recently by your general dentist. This is very important in order to determine whether there are any extra or missing teeth or other problems with your dental development. At this visit we should be able to determine if this is a good time to start treatment and we should also be able to answer most of your questions regarding the type of orthodontic treatment necessary as well as the duration and cost of treatment. We feel it is critical however that additional diagnostic records be accomplished before any treatment is started. This is necessary to accurately determine the jaw and tooth relationships and the jaw growth tendencies. Also diagnostic study casts are taken and used to complete the treatment planning phase. These additional studies can usually be accomplished at the same visit following your examination. Although we can often be close to a correct diagnosis without these studies we are sure that you feel as we do that just being close is not sufficient when it comes to the diagnosis and planning of your treatment. |
